Hoover merchants gathered Oct. 15 to hear U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer speak at the monthly chamber of commerce meeting at the Hyatt Regency-Wynfrey Hotel.

Palmer was elected as the representative for Alabama’s sixth congressional district in 2014. He is a Hoover resident.

Palmer spoke at length about his work in Congress. He sits on the budget committee and recently was part of creating the balanced budget plan that the House passed.

Mr. Koskinen repeatedly gave misleading and false testimony to Congress, and failed to preserve evidence related to the troubling scandal where various conservative non-profit organizations were targeted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for exercising their right to freedom of speech.

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer visited Chilton County on May 5, speaking at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon and touring local schools.

Palmer was introduced at the luncheon by Kevin Corley, pastor at Grace Fellowship church in Clanton who is family friends with Palmer.

Palmer talked about the number of committees he’s a part of, and some of the main points of his platform.

“We have to get our fiscal house in order,” Palmer said about the country’s financial situation.

The U.S. House has put a stake in the heart of the death tax. By a vote of 240-179, the House voted Thursday to repeal what's officially known as the estate tax that covers property transferred from a deceased person to their heirs. The federal tax on estates is 40 percent, though the number of people that actually pay that amount is less than 2 percent.

Rep. Palmer voted today for H.R. 1105, the Death Tax Repeal Act, and gives the following statement: 

“The bill we passed today would permanently eliminate the death tax.  This is long overdue.  The death tax presents a significant danger to family farms and other small business.  The death tax, originally created to fund the World War I, was intended to be temporary.  I doubt it was ever good policy, but in any event, the purpose for it has long passed and it is time it meet its permanent end.”

WASHINGTON — Representatives Gary Palmer (R-AL6) and Mo Brooks have signed on to co-sponsor this year’s Fair Tax bill in the U.S. House, signaling even more support from the Alabama congressional delegation for an overhaul of the tax code.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House voted Thursday to repeal the Estate Tax, commonly known as the “Death Tax,” which takes nearly half of the estate of anyone who leaves more than $5.4 million in a will.
