July 10, 2015
Fire departments in Blount and Chilton counties have received grants totaling more than $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to buy new equipment.
The West Blount County Fire Department in Hayden received a grant for $247,620 to buy a new tanker pumper truck, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer. The truck can hold more water than a normal fire truck, which lets the department work more effectively in areas without fire hydrants nearby.
The Cedar Grove Fire Department in Chilton County received $91,429 for new self-contained breathing apparatus.
The grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program from the Department of Homeland Security.
