Palmer backs permanent congressional DOGE oversight amidst Trump, Musk feud — 'The DOGE mindset should not be a passing trend’

While Elon Musk and President Donald Trump spent the majority of Thursday in an online dispute over disagreements with Trump's proposed budget package, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) is calling for Congress to cut supposedly wasteful spending found by Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The U.S Senate is returning to Washington this week to address Trump's so-called Big Beautiful Bill, which encompasses tax reforms, spending cuts, border security measures, defense spending and other policy priorities.
Musk, who spent the months leading up to the November 2024 election making every effort to help elect Trump, recently departed from his role in the federal government after publicly opposing the Big Beautiful Bill over the raising the debt sealing and not permanently cutting alleged wasteful government spending discovered by DOGE, which Musk sees as excessive and unnecessary.
What followed was an online feud between Musk and Trump, which rapidly turned ugly on Thursday.
In response to Musk's departure, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) introduced legislation to give Congress access to Treasury Department invoices larger than $25,000 in real time; an apparent move to pick up where Musk and DOGE left off.
Palmer, who was one of the first lawmakers in Congress to join the House's DOGE Caucus, was swift to back Roy's move as one of the bill's first cosponsors.
