The Warrior Fire Department has received a federal grant worth nearly $1 million that will allow it to hire nine full-time firefighters, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer's office.
The grant is an Assistance to Firefighters Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant worth $968,400 awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The increase will allow the department to have four firefighters on duty per shift at all times. The grant is for two years.
The Warrior Fire Department serves an area that includes part of Interstate 65 in northern Jefferson County.
The department competed against other departments for a share of federal funding.
