Palmer Echoes Optimistic Vision for America from State of the Union Address
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gary Palmer (AL-06) released the following statement after attending President Trump's fourth State of the Union Address.
"Tonight, the President highlighted every reason why Americans are optimistic and have hope for the future," Palmer said. "President Trump has delivered on his promises. Our economy is stronger than ever before and unemployment is at a 50-year low. We're seeing real-life results from President Trump's pro-growth policies. Four years ago, the economy was stagnant and the unemployment rate was discouragingly high. Now, people's lives are tangibly better and the President has a vision to continue making them even better. Tax reform has put more money back into people's paychecks and bank accounts, and the recently signed trade agreements with China and Mexico and Canada will add thousands of new jobs, particularly manufacturing jobs. President Trump put it well tonight when he said, ‘Our agenda is relentlessly pro-worker, pro-family, pro-growth, and, most of all, pro-American.'"
"I've heard personally from hard-working Alabamians about how tax reform and the growing economy have made a difference in their lives," Palmer continued. "Since President Trump's election, 100,000 jobs have been created in Alabama, and 10,000 of those are manufacturing jobs. The state unemployment rate has dropped to a record low of 2.7%, and thousands of people are no longer in poverty. There are also over 150 Opportunity Zones throughout Alabama that are now drawing business investment. One of the President's special guests tonight, Paul Morrow, is an example of someone benefitting personally. Morrow is a U.S. Army veteran, and after his service, he started a contracting business and is currently building a new concrete plant in an Opportunity Zone in Montgomery County."
"President Trump has also kept his promises to protect and defend America. Under his leadership, America has reestablished a needed policy of deterrence. In previous years, inadequate security and failure to respond to threats resulted in loss of life and the emboldening of those who wanted to harm Americans. But with the killing of the terrorist Qasem Soleimani within the first month of this year, President Trump has put our enemies on notice that America will defend its own. In the weeks since, he has also negotiated diplomatic relations in the Middle East with the safety of Americans and our allies as his top priority. He summed it up well tonight by saying, ‘As we defend American lives, we are working to end America's wars in the Middle East.'"
"Under this Administration, Americans have become safer and more prosperous, and President Trump emphasized tonight that he has a bold vision for an even more secure and prosperous future. Over the last four years, regulations have been rolled back, reducing regulatory costs by over $50 million. Our military has been rebuilt, with Space Force on the horizon. A number of constitutionalist lawmakers have been appointed to the courts, including two Supreme Court Justices. The opioid crisis has been stymied, the border is being secured, and loopholes have been closed in welfare programs like food stamps. This list represents a small fraction of this Administration's accomplishments that have improved the lives of the American people. The state of the union is strong, and over the next four years, we will continue working to make it even stronger."
