Palmer Remembers Attacks on Pearl Harbor
Washington, D.C. – On today’s 80th anniversary of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor, Congressman Gary Palmer (AL-06) released the following statement:
“Today, we’re reminded of how the attacks on Pearl Harbor launched America into World War II, and of those who answered the call to protect liberty around the world. Their courage will never be forgotten. I think it’s also important to remember other attacks that were simultaneously carried out on Wake Island in the Pacific. They began on the morning of December 8th, and U.S. Marines and Naval men held the island for 15 days until fierce Japanese assaults forced them to surrender on December 23rd. The last message received from American soldiers manning the island said, ‘Enemy on island – issue in doubt.’
“On this somber anniversary, I’m thinking of Pearl Harbor and those who stepped up afterwards to defend liberty, sometimes in less noticeable ways. So, while we remember those who perished at Pearl Harbor, it is also fitting to remember the soldiers on Wake Island, who, though not as well-known, paid a high price in defense of our freedom.”
